Matt started to produce pies that were free from gluten following hundreds of requests from loyal pie fans who had gone gluten-free but were sorely missing their favourite Hull Pies.
With any new product range, it takes time and tweaking to get things right, and so Matt has spent the last two years trialling different pastry recipes, pie flavours, meeting customers, and gauging interest in a more permanent gluten free offering.
Many of our Gluten Free customers now know Matt personally, and have made a significant contribution to the development of our new Gluten Free range.
In late 2016, we won the Deliciously Yorkshire & Yorkshire Post Taste Award for Best Free From Product for our Succulent Steak Gluten Free Pie, confirming that we had something really special to offer our customers.
Building on this, Matt held an event at Fruit in Hull with the aim of meeting gluten free customers face-to-face and gaining a better understanding of what is important to them.
But, without a special space in which to make gluten free produce, making large batches of gluten free pies required us to temporarily shut down production of our non-gluten free pies and sweets. We managed to do this a few times in 2017 but as we headed into the busy summer events season it became clear that this wasn't feasible moving forwards.
In order for us to be able to provide a broader range of gluten free products on a consistent basis, we needed to set up an entirely new bakery.
In January 2018, Matt is taking the plunge, closing his Cottingham Road shop to build a Gluten Free bakery, making Gluten Free pies a priority for our busy and ensuring they are consistently available to our customers in Hull & the East Riding.
